The asities (family Philepittidae) is a family of birds belonging to the order Passeriformes — one of its most primitive groups. It is one of the five families endemic to Madagascar, along with the mesites, the cuckoo-roller, the ground rollers and the Malagasy warblers. These rainforest dwellers are frugivorous, making them among the most efficient avian seed dispersers of Madagascar. They are sexually dimorphic, with males showing bright plumages and an attractive wattle which is pigmented via a unique mechanism among animals.

The family comprises 4 species in 2 genera. Genus Philepitta (2 species) includes relatively large, stocky birds, one inhabiting rainforests and the other restricted to moist dry forest species. Genus Neodrepanis (2 species), usually known as the sunbird-asities, includes small pollinating birds adapted to feed on flowers using an adapted tongue and a long, curved bill, and dwell on different elevations of the rainforest.

Velvet asity

Philepitta castanea

Endemic to the rainforest of eastern Madagascar. Males of this polygamous species show a bright green wattle above their eye and have bright feather tips in freshly-moulted plumage, but these markings wear off, causing the jet black plumage. I have seen this species in Madagascar.
