The osprey (family Pandionidae) is a monotypic family of birds belonging to the order Accipitriformes. It is found in freshwater bodies and coastal areas of all bioregions except Antarctica and has the second largest distribution range of all birds. This diurnal raptor is adapted to catch fish on the wing on large water bodies thanks to unique reversible outer toes with sharp structures for grip. They nest in large stick-made structures on rocky outcrops, trees or buildings.

The family comprises 1 species in 1 genus. Genus Pandion inhabits numerous water bodies worldwide, being a migratory species only in part of its range. There are four forms currently recognized, two from the Old World and two from the New World.

Osprey

Pandion haliaetus

Typical bird of wetlands, lakes and coastal areas of most regions in the world. Best known for its skillful hunts of fish on the wing and characteristic brown-and-white plumage and gull-like flight. This species is present during migration and winter and is currently being reintroduced as a breeder in Alicante. It is a common summer visitor of wetlands in Helsinki. I have also seen this species in Kenya and India.
