Cape Town might be one of the most interesting urban birdwatching I have ever visited. Within few kms, the city area harbors pelicans, penguins, albatrosses and a set of smart endemics.

Waters around Cape Town gather some of the best seabird densities worldwide. We connected with hundreds of albatrosses, thousands of petrels including several spectacled petrels and Antarctic prions.

The shrublands and grasslands of the karoo offered an array of habitat endemics including numerous bustards, warblers, chats and larks as we drove north of Cape Town for some days.

The arid island of Fuerteventura holds a diversity of habitats with different specialties, from Canary Island stonechat in gorges to trumpeter finches in deserts or introduced species in lawns and gardens.

A couple of days within student life in Naivasha and amidst local fishermen in Lake Oloiden provided close encounters with large mammals plus storks, pelicans, hamerkops, buzzards, swallows and more.

Kenya’s capital city provided an unexpected deal of specialties over a couple of days at Wildebeest Eco Camp and a short visit to Karura Forest: sunbirds, cuckoos, mousebirds, robin-chats, waterbirds and more.

Maasai Mara protects a massive pristine grassland and is home to millions of ungulates. A day in the National Reserve resulted in a vast list of mammals, raptors, lapwings, larks, cisticolas, cranes plus some surprises.

Arabuko Sokoke is the largest remnant of East African coastal forest. Walking its trails produced endemic Sokoke scops-owl, Amani sunbird and golden-rumped sengi and a close encounter with an elephant!
